Why Does My Air Conditioner Smell Sour?

There could be many reasons why your AC system is giving off a weird and unattractive smell. It could be because your unit is most likely suffering from an issue involving its condensation removal system. Condensation can occur when your unit’s cooling system is drained improperly. This creates conditions necessary for sour-smelling bacteria and mold to grow inside your system. We’ve listed a few reasons why your air conditioner could be giving off that sour smell.

A Bad Air Filter

One reason for this awful smell could be from a clogged or old air filter in your system. When a filter isn’t doing its job it prevents air from cycling through your unit. When that happens the air gets more and more humid which creates an environment suitable for mold and mildew to grow. It’s best to check your air filter at least once a month to ensure it’s functioning properly.

Clogged Condensation Pan

Most AC units function the same way; by pulling in air through a filter and then cold copper coils cool the air and it’s pushed back into the house. With the coils cooling the air, condensation is created and then drained into the condensation pan for disposal. The condensation pan is attached to a pump that takes the liquid and drains it into the soil or a floor drain. If your unit hasn’t been serviced in a while, a clogged condensation pan could be the reason behind that sour smell.

Mold & Mildew in the Ducts

If you’ve had a moisture problem in your AC unit for a long time, you might have mold and mildew growing inside your air ducts. If this is the case, it could potentially become a dangerous situation and affect your indoor air quality. If you think this is the reason behind the smell, don’t hesitate to give us a call!
